Carole Hughes is a New Zealand Artist from Cambridge who has a passion for colour and a love of the Fauve artists. The use of colour, the bold thick strokes and almost primitive and naive way of putting paint and oil pastel to canvas is a magical blend in itself and has become almost unique to this self-taught artist. Carole has held many exhibitions throughout New Zealand. Many of her paintings have travelled overseas with eager buyers and those who purchase initially one work returning to add to their collections. She says that it is people who want boldness and a natural concept, those who feel an emotion for the use of colour in a very free way who appreciate her style, people who want something totally different. Her work is essentially Expressionism and she has studied the worked of the German Expressionists and the Fauves. Fauve art is known for the strong and unusual use of colour and originated in Paris between 1901 and 1906 making the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gaugin and Henri Matisse the leaders in Fauve Art. Carole paints Europe, Jazz and Classical music and has completed several works on Wellington. Always looking for new material she travels regularly to Europe and has a familiarity with Bosnia, Italy and Franc, all of which have been relayed to canvas. Carole Hughes’ art can be described as an unselfconscious use of colour and shape giving huge visual pleasure. Click here to view Carole's artworks. |
