Grant was born in 1956 and raised in Auckland as part of a large family with devoted parents. Growing up on the Manukau Harbour with freedom to explore and interact with the environment gave him an appreciation for natural things. Holidays at beaches around Auckland including Waiheke Island and the Coromandel Peninsula made him aware of the qualities displayed by nature and how they speak to the heart. “Awesome beauty, wisdom and power can be seen in the natural environment, and even love can be seen in that we ourselves have been made with the ability to appreciate and enjoy these things.” Grant’s first interest in art was displayed at primary school level where art and drawing became a favourite subject. A career in business took him away from art until 1998. A change in circumstances and a move to the Coromandel once again rekindled a desire not just to earn a living but to do so in an enjoyable and fulfilling way. Consequently from mid 2003 painting has become his occupation. Grant is a self taught artist with no formal training. His style could be described as overwhelming realism and his goal is to reproduce in a painting the feelings you get when you see a thing of beauty- something that recalls a favourite place, or a forgotten memory. His preferred medium in oil on canvas. Consequently painting local scenes has produced excellent sales to people who live on or visit the Coromandel as they can relate to things like warm summer days looking out onto a beautiful sea and sky from the shade of a Pohutakawa tree, one of Grants favourite subjects. Grants first exhibition was held in January 2005 at Harrisons of Whangamata and was a great success with almost all works on display selling on opening night. |
