Simona Madonna

Simona Madonna Italian born, works and lives on Waiheke Island, New Zealand. Simona trained as a graphic and product designer in Florence and as a fabric design in Rome. Simona is an industrial designer/artist in the fullest sense. Her professional experience includes:
- textile and graphic design
- costume and theatrical creations as well as design
- art and teaching assistant
- glass and jewellery design/making

Her interest in different mediums and in the varieties of ways of being creative, combined with her passion for travelling took her to New Zealand where she established, under her own brand, a line of Italian fine food products and services and opened her own pottery and painting studio.

Her work has attracted the attention of magazines like: OTTAGONO design & designers, Next Magazine and the Italian TV programme "Velisti per caso" by Patrizio Roversi e Syusy Blady.

 Simona’s Philosophy in Art and design

Feminine and masculine, day and night, life and death – these fundamental dualities present in life are the themes that influence my research and guide the threads of my work and my thoughts.

‘In una goccia d’acqua e’ racchiuso l’universo.’
In painting the within is without and vice versa. A drop of water holds the secret of the sea, the macrocosm is the microcosm, the structure and texture of nature reminds me of where I come from and these are the stories that I want to reveal on canvas.

In pottery the concept of a ‘family’ of items is important for me. As an artist I need to make individual objects that fit together – the idea of a ‘set’ of plates, a set of cups isn’t appealing for me, but rather families of plates, families of cups…this makes every single piece unique.
